Humans are essentially dependent on a constant body temperature, which is regulated by the hypothalamus. Sedation, anesthesia and various medications, as well as the conditions in the operating room, severely disrupt the fine balance for the functioning of homeostatic body functions. For this reason, heat preservation and its monitoring are extremely important for anesthesia. The smaller a body is, the higher its surface area is relative to its volume and, consequently, the heat exchange with the surroundings. For this reason, small people and children in particular cool down quickly during the perioperative period!
