Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia - "HIT" / 304-12

Heparin‐induced thrombocytopenias presentate in 2 forms: HIT type 1 is the non-immunological, early and mostly harmless form. HIT type 2 is a potentially life threatening immune mediated adverse drug reaction due activated antibodies which in turn activate platelets in the presence of (unfractioned & lmw) heparin. Distinguishing the two forms is important because their danger is very different and so is their management. The clinical management of both forms as well as an established probability test are presented clearly
