Although some centers offer thyroid surgery under regional anesthesia, general anesthesia is the most commonly used procedure worldwide. For anesthesia, monitoring of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (vocal cord paralysis!), the management of difficult airways in cases of severe goiter, the risk of secondary bleeding and, of course, acute endocrinological risks (hypocalcemia after parathyroidectomy, acute hypothyroidism) are particularly important.
