The main physiological task of the lungs is known to be gas exchange. The physiological sense of this task is optimally fulfilled for the body when the 3 components of breathing ventilation, diffusion and perfusion are optimally coordinated. The zones of West describe the relationship between ventilation and perfusion in spontaneously breathing, upright people. The physical basis of this process with its overlapping areas is presented here for mechanically ventilated patients. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31577170/
